Ulysses “Lothar” vom Dortmunder in “The Brave”

We are very proud to pass on some news of one of our puppies! Ulysses “Lothar” vom Dortmunder was in a movie a few weeks ago. In the television movie series, “The Brave,” Lothar played the part of an Iranian Republican Guard’s bomb sniffing dog. With 120 other people, they were on set for twelve hours. They shot at night with no fences and an actor was the person appearing with Lothar.

Lothar’s owner was the production’s “animal wrangler” for the day. There was quite a bit of action (with gun fire.). People were actually lining up to pet the Lote.

Lothar is also trained and fully registered as a United States Service Animal. He goes to all his owner’s (an attorney) Civil Court Trials and Lothar can fly with his owner (in the seat next to him) to anywhere in the world.

Not sure what to write? Here’s a great example!

240361_209637952407930_170314119673647_553905_6216239_oWhat a dog!! We were very thorough in our search for a German Shepherd and had a hard time finding breeders whose standards were up to par. Linda was referred to us by another GSD breeder in Colorado and boy did she know her stuff. When we went to visit our soon to be pup Linda showed us the facility, all the paperwork and everything else you can possibly imagine. Even after we took Riley home we took her to weekly Schutzhund training with Linda. Riley goes everywhere with us…swimming, hiking, skiing, horse back riding…. you name it she loves it! At 6 years old, Riley is a wonderful, loyal, energetic and loving part of our family.”

The Christmas puppy: A word about puppies as gifts

Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays!

Everyone at Vom Dortmunder German Shepherds loves to see our puppies in their forever homes. We have been receiving a lot of questions about Christmas puppies for sale recently. During the Holiday season we suggest you do NOT give a puppy or dog (or any animal) as a gift but rather put down a deposit ($500) on a litter and let your family or intended recipient pick a puppy together.

The Dortmunder team (and most breeders) consider deposits to be fluid- so your special person can choose the time best for them to add a puppy to their life. If we don’t have the desired sex or coat type puppy available then we can easily mark the next litter and this recipient can get exactly what their heart desires.

Your loved one might not actually have the time or resources for a new family member when you decide to gift it. So don’t set anyone up for failure. Instead for the holidays/special event, consider this:

4 Steps for Giving Puppies As Gifts

  • Plot With Professionals. Contact us and explain the situation. We love to conspire with you! Arrange to pay a deposit, or fund the purchase FOR the recipient, with the puppy to be chosen later.  Ask us about trainers pre-pay puppy training classes for the new family member, or fund the cost of the puppy’s first veterinary visit for puppy shots!Another great point to this is that you can involve multiple gifters in purchasing a puppy!

  • Go Shopping. Here is an Amazon List of products we recommend for your puppy kit! Create a “puppy care package” for the big day. Fill a puppy bed with treats, food, training and grooming equipment, and lots—lots!—of appropriate toys. Don’t forget to include a book or two about the puppy’s breed, training tips, or other fun information.

  • Get Creative. Why not make a “gift certificate” that details this special surprise, and have that ready to present on the big day. Perhaps it could be packaged inside a pet carrier, or in an envelope attached to the collar of a stuffed German Shepherd plush toy.

  • Take Your Time. Holidays can be hectic when normal routines go out the window. New puppies need the stability of knowing what to expect. But you can “gift” with the certificate on the special day, and the recipient can choose the best time to bring the pet home. Hopefully you also have the fun of accompanying the person later, when they choose their own furry wonder.

When you do it right, gifting with a puppy can be magic. You’re not only giving the pet to a person—you’re giving a special human to a waiting puppy.

In Memory of VA Emster V Bullinger

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our faithful Emster v Bullinger. As we mourn the loss of a great dog, we are reminded that death is as much a part of life as being born.
She was a rising star and the best companion. Her performance at the Canadian Seiger show was impeccable. From the moment Emster entered our home we knew she would leave paw prints on our heart. Please forgive us for not answering phone calls or emails for a few days. Emster’s loss is felt deeply by everyone at Vom Dortmunder German Shepherds.

Good news from Canada

Yesterday Hoss v Bullinger was awarded his Breed Survey for Life!

“The breed survey is the ultimate instrument used as the selection method for the German Shepherd Dog Breed. It is absolutely necessary for the preservation and advancement of this breed. Originally developed in Germany for their domestic stock, in 1922 the breed survey also became the tool used as a resource for breeding the German Shepherd Dog.  Simply explained, German Shepherd Dogs need a certificate for reproduction.

This certificate is issued by our organization which follows a special procedure where the breed survey judge evaluates the dog’s temperament in different stimulus situations. The dog must always demonstrate a friendly and self-confident character and in any situation, must show control even when in confrontation with its own natural instincts.

For more information on What a Breed Survey means and why they are important please visit the United Schutzhund Clubs of America’s site.

Today Emster v Bullinger and Hoss both passed their bitework portion and will show later today. We are so proud of our dogs and grateful for all the help and assistance we’ve received from trainers, helpers, and friends.
